Whenever I tell someone I’m a “Graphic Designer,” I typically get a pretty dull response. Everybody already knows what a graphic designer does. Or do they? The more people I talk to, the more I realize that everyone has their own idea of what a graphic designer is. I’ve heard everything from “Oh, so you edit magazines?” (I wish), or even “So you, like, design stickers right?” Quite an interesting variety of ideas. It does make you wonder: what do graphic designers do? Here’s my take.
The term “Graphic Designer” is incredibly broad. It is used to describe people who create visual media on a computer. So that’s the long and short of it! That’s not terribly helpful, is it? The problem is graphic designers can, and typically do, produce several different types of media. When someone inquires about our career it could sound like, “I’m a video editor, but I also create logos, and business cards, and websites, etc…” So it’s really easy to slap on the title “Graphic Designer” or “Desktop Publisher”. Some designers do specialize in one or two niches like print, even more specifically print layout, or maybe web design. However, many freelance designers perform several different tasks relating to design and marketing. It’s completely acceptable to ask a graphic designer what kinds of things they design. If you are looking to hire, ask to see their portfolio. His or her portfolio should give you a good indication of their strengths and specialties.
That being said, what does this graphic designer do? Like most freelance designers, I engage a large variety of media. Being in the early stages of my career, I am still determining my focus: discovering a niche, so to speak. As of now, I really enjoy print design: Anything that can be printed on physical media. It could be business cards or movie posters, wedding invites or billboards. Typography is another favorite of mine. I’m a nerd that way. Typography is really applicable to any media (print, digital, layout, etc.) as it is the layout and use of type and copy.
As I stated earlier, I produce a variety of design work and love every minute of it. If you find yourself in need of a graphic designer, feel free to contact me with any questions or requests!
